Fairplay, Colorado sits near 10,000 feet in the South Park basin—the real place that inspired the TV show's setting. The surrounding region offers high-country trails, regulated fishing, broad mountain views, and rewarding dark-sky potential when conditions cooperate.
Most people drive through Fairplay on the way to Breckenridge without stopping. That's a mistake. This town of 750 people is surrounded by more outdoor activities than you could fit into a week, has genuinely good restaurants, and offers the kind of quiet mountain experience that resort towns lost a long time ago.
We know this place inside and out. This is everything worth doing.
What's in This Guide
Hiking & 14ers
Fairplay is within day-trip range of short walks and demanding fourteeners. High-elevation routes require conservative weather planning, current access checks, and an honest assessment of fitness and altitude response.
Quandary Peak
Quandary's East Ridge is a popular but strenuous high-altitude route with long exposure above treeline. Seasonal parking or shuttle requirements may apply; verify current Summit County rules and the forecast before leaving.
The DeCaLiBron Route
This strenuous high-alpine route crosses both public land and private mining claims. The Mount Bross summit remains closed, so hikers must use the signed bypass. Check the Colorado Mountain Club's current access information, posted signs, road status, and weather before leaving.
Blue Lakes Trail
One of the best effort-to-reward ratios on this list. A short, easy trail with stunning shoreline views of Blue Lake nestled in a mountain valley. Perfect for children, groups with mixed abilities, and leashed dogs. Don't miss the waterfall — you can hike right up to it.
Limber Grove Trail
Walk through groves of ancient bristlecone pine trees — some over 1,000 years old. A quieter alternative to the 14er crowds with a completely different kind of mountain beauty. The twisted, weathered trees at this elevation are unlike anything you've seen.
For the complete trail-by-trail breakdown with distances, difficulty ratings, and seasonal tips, read our full hiking guide.
Fly Fishing
Fairplay promotes its South Park fishing heritage, with river reaches and reservoirs within day-trip range. Gold Medal designations, public access, seasons, and special regulations differ by exact water, so check current Colorado Parks and Wildlife resources before fishing.
Middle Fork of the South Platte River
Runs right through Fairplay. Classic high-elevation meadow stream fishing with mountain views in every direction. Public access is good in town. This is the quintessential South Park fishing experience.
Arkansas River
One of the most celebrated trout rivers in the American West. The stretch through Browns Canyon is particularly productive. Guided float trips available from Buena Vista and Salida outfitters.
Antero & Spinney Mountain Reservoirs
Spinney and Antero support high-country fishing opportunities, but regulations, reservoir operations, and ice conditions change. Check CPW rules and never assume ice is safe from the calendar alone.
Rough & Tumbling Creek
A quieter option for anglers who prefer smaller water. Classic mountain stream with pocket water, small pools, and native brook trout. You'll almost certainly have it to yourself.

Skiing & Winter Sports
From Skyfall, Breckenridge is roughly 45–60 minutes in normal conditions. Copper and Keystone usually take about 60–75 minutes, while A-Basin and Loveland generally take longer. Confirm current resort operations and parking, and check COtrip before leaving.
Breckenridge Ski Resort
The big one. Five peaks, terrain for every level, and one of the highest lift-served points in North America. The drive over Hoosier Pass is beautiful, and you skip the I-70 traffic entirely.
Keystone Resort
Keystone spans three peaks and advertises night skiing on selected dates. Hours, terrain status, and operating days change, so check the resort's current schedule.
Winter Beyond Skiing
Ice fishing — Antero, Spinney, and Eleven Mile reservoirs all have strong ice fishing scenes from December through March.
Snowshoeing & cross-country skiing — Miles of trails through the South Park basin. Boreas Pass Road is a popular route.
Snowmobiling — Rentals and guided tours available through local outfitters.

Stargazing
South Park's high elevation and distance from major city centers can produce rewarding dark-sky viewing. The Milky Way may be visible on clear, moonless nights; clouds, smoke, season, moonlight, and nearby artificial light all affect the view.
Why It's So Good Here
Fairplay sits in a broad high-country basin away from major city centers. That setting can produce rewarding dark-sky viewing, though local lights, moonlight, clouds, smoke, wind, and season all affect the view.
Best viewing spots, what you can see by season, and photography tips in our stargazing guide.
Off-Roading & Scenic Drives
Mosquito Pass
A rough, high-altitude four-wheel-drive route toward Leadville over the Continental Divide. Seasonal opening, weather, vehicle requirements, and closures vary; check current road status before attempting it.
Boreas Pass Road
A gentler scenic drive accessible to most vehicles in summer. Follows the historic Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad route over the Continental Divide to Breckenridge. Wildflowers in summer, golden aspens in fall. One of the best scenic drives in the area. Great for snowshoeing in winter.

The signature Fairplay event. A weekend-long celebration centered around a 29-mile burro (donkey) race over 13,000-foot Mosquito Pass. Parade, llama races, cowboy church, live music, and vendors. This tradition goes back to the mining days when burros were essential pack animals. It's as Colorado as it gets.
