Rivers & Streams
Middle Fork of the South Platte River
The Middle Fork runs right through Fairplay and is the signature fishery of the South Park basin. This is classic high-elevation meadow stream fishing — long, slow runs through wide-open grassland with mountain views in every direction. The river meanders through the valley floor, creating deep undercut banks where big browns hold.
The Middle Fork fishes differently than most Colorado rivers. It's not pocket water — it's long, smooth runs that demand a careful approach. Wade slowly, cast upstream, and let your nymphs drift deep along the banks. Dry-dropper rigs are productive here, especially in summer evenings when the caddis come off.
Public access is good through town and along Highway 9. The stretches south of Fairplay toward Hartsel are less pressured. Some of the best water is on private ranches — a guided trip is worth it to access those sections.

South Platte River — Hartsel Area
South of Fairplay toward Hartsel, the South Platte meanders through the wide-open South Park basin. Feels like you're fishing in Montana — big sky, open grassland, and trout rising in slow water. More technical than the Middle Fork, rewarding patient anglers who present a clean drift.
The Hartsel section is a local favorite for wade fishing. Less pressure than the Middle Fork and more solitude. The fish here see fewer flies and can be more willing to eat, but they're also in shallower, clearer water where your approach matters. Long leaders and fine tippet are your friends.
Arkansas River
One of the most celebrated trout rivers in the American West. The Arkansas flows south through Buena Vista and Salida with over 100 miles of Gold Medal water. The stretch through Browns Canyon National Monument is particularly productive — a mix of pocket water, riffles, and deep runs with stunning canyon scenery.
The Arkansas is bigger water than the South Park streams — more volume, more structure, and bigger fish. It fishes well from both bank and boat. Guided float trips are one of the best ways to cover water and access spots you can't reach wading. Outfitters in Buena Vista and Salida run trips daily in season.
The drive from Fairplay to the Arkansas is one of the most scenic in Colorado — south on 285 through Trout Creek Pass with views of the Collegiate Peaks opening up as you descend into the valley. You can combine a morning of fishing with lunch in Buena Vista or a soak in the hot springs.

Rough & Tumbling Creek
The sleeper pick on this list. Rough & Tumbling Creek is a classic small mountain stream with pocket water, plunge pools, and native brook trout. The fish are smaller but eager, and you'll almost certainly have the creek to yourself. This is the kind of fishing where you can leave the indicators at home and just fish a small dry fly upstream through the pockets.
Perfect for anglers who want solitude over trophy fish. The setting is beautiful — mountain creek winding through forest and meadow. A great option for a half-day trip or for introducing someone to fly fishing in a low-pressure environment.
Reservoirs & Trophy Water
The South Park reservoirs are some of the most productive stillwater fisheries in Colorado. They produce trophy trout year-round — including through the ice — and offer a completely different fishing experience than the rivers.
Antero Reservoir
Sitting at over 9,000 feet with sweeping views of the Collegiate Peaks, Antero is known for producing large trout — fish over 20 inches are not uncommon. The reservoir is shallow enough to fish effectively from shore or by float tube. In winter, it's one of the top ice fishing destinations in Colorado.
Antero fishes best early and late in the day. Midges are the year-round staple — both chironomid patterns under an indicator and adult midges on top. In spring, the ice-off period is prime time. Fish are hungry, concentrated in shallow water, and feeding aggressively. If you can time a trip for the first two weeks after ice-off, you'll have some of the best fishing of the year.
Spinney Mountain Reservoir
Where you go for big fish. Spinney is managed by CPW as a trophy fishery with special regulations — artificial flies and lures only. It consistently produces rainbow and brown trout in the 18-24 inch range, with pike as a bonus predator. This water earns its reputation.
Spinney rewards patience and the right presentation. From a boat or float tube, target the drop-offs and weed edges with streamers or nymphs. From shore, long casts with chironomids under an indicator are the standard approach. The fish here are well-fed and selective — match the hatch and use appropriately light tippet.
Eleven Mile Reservoir
The biggest and most diverse fishery in the area. Trout, kokanee salmon, northern pike, and even carp. The reservoir sits in a beautiful canyon setting. Combine a fishing trip with camping, kayaking, or exploring. The stream below the dam — the South Platte through Eleven Mile Canyon — is excellent tailwater fishing in its own right.
Tarryall Reservoir
Often overlooked in favor of Spinney and Eleven Mile, which makes it a great option when those waters are crowded. The scenic drive northeast through the Tarryall Valley is worth it alone. Good shore access and the creek below the reservoir is underrated.

Seasonal Fishing Calendar
Spring (April - May)
The play: Reservoir ice-off. This is one of the most productive windows of the entire year. Trout are hungry after a long winter, concentrated in warming shallow water, and feeding aggressively near the surface. Rivers can run high and muddy from snowmelt, so stillwater is usually the better bet. Late May brings the legendary "Mother's Day Caddis" hatch on the Arkansas River.
Summer (June - September)
The play: Rivers. This is peak season for fly fishing the streams. Hatches are consistent, water levels stabilize after runoff, and long summer evenings make for incredible dry fly fishing. PMDs, caddis, and stoneflies keep fish looking up. Reservoirs fish well early and late in the day but slow down in the midday heat. This is the best time to book a guided trip on the Arkansas.
Fall (September - November)
The play: Brown trout on the rivers. Many locals' favorite season. Browns get aggressive during their fall spawning run — they're territorial, hungry, and willing to chase streamers. Fewer anglers on the water, cooler weather, and the gold aspens lining the streams make for an unforgettable backdrop. The reservoirs also fish well as water temperatures drop and trout feed up for winter.
Winter (December - March)
The play: Ice fishing. Antero, Spinney, Eleven Mile, and Jefferson Lake all have strong ice fishing scenes. Sitting on the ice at 9,000+ feet surrounded by mountains is a uniquely Colorado experience. Midges through the ice are the primary pattern. The Middle Fork stays open and fishable for the hardy — tiny midge patterns and a slow approach are the key.

Special Regulations to Know
Spinney Mountain: Artificial flies and lures only. All trout under 20 inches must be returned. 1 trout bag limit over 20 inches.
