25+ Things to Do in Fairplay, Colorado

Hiking, fishing, skiing, restaurants, stargazing, off-roading and more — the complete local guide to Colorado's best-kept mountain secret, just 2 hours from Denver.

16 min read · Updated April 2026 · Skyfall Chalet

Fairplay, Colorado sits at 10,000 feet in the South Park basin — yes, the real South Park that inspired the TV show. But forget the cartoon. The real South Park is a thousand square miles of mountain beauty surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks, Gold Medal trout streams, and some of the best dark sky stargazing in the lower 48.

Most people drive through Fairplay on the way to Breckenridge without stopping. That's a mistake. This town of 750 people is surrounded by more outdoor activities than you could fit into a week, has genuinely good restaurants, and offers the kind of quiet mountain experience that resort towns lost a long time ago. Founded in 1859 during the gold rush, the town was named by miners who wanted a more equitable alternative to the claim-jumping happening at other camps. That spirit of fairness and independence still defines the place.

This guide covers everything worth doing.

Why Denver Visitors Love Fairplay

If you live on the Front Range, you already know the I-70 nightmare — hours of bumper-to-bumper traffic just to reach a ski town where a hotel room costs $400/night. Fairplay is the antidote.

The 2-Hour Escape

Skip I-70 entirely. Fairplay is approximately 100 miles from Denver via US-285 — a scenic two-lane highway through the mountains with almost no traffic. You'll be at 10,000 feet in about 2 hours, passing through Kenosha Pass (one of the best fall-color drives in Colorado) along the way.

No resort-town crowds. Fairplay isn't a tourist trap. It's a real community of about 750 people where restaurants close when they feel like it and the biggest traffic jam is a moose crossing the road. You get the same mountains, the same skiing, the same fishing — without the crowds.

Significantly cheaper than Breckenridge. Lodging in Fairplay is a fraction of what you'd pay in any Summit County resort town, and you're only 45 minutes from the same ski lifts. Your dollar goes dramatically further here.

Perfect weekend escape. Leave Denver Friday after work, be in the mountains by 7 PM. Two full days of hiking, fishing, skiing, or doing absolutely nothing — then drive home Sunday evening without sitting in traffic. It's the easiest mountain getaway from the Front Range.

Stargazing

At 10,000 feet with zero light pollution, the night sky in South Park is extraordinary. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, and on clear nights you can see more stars than you've ever seen in your life. No special equipment needed — just step outside and look up.

Why It's So Good Here

Fairplay sits in a massive open basin far from any major city lights. Denver is 100+ miles away behind multiple mountain ranges. The high elevation puts you above much of the atmospheric interference. And the dry mountain air means clearer skies more nights per year than most places in the country.

The signature Fairplay event. A weekend-long celebration centered around a 29-mile burro (donkey) race over 13,000-foot Mosquito Pass. Parade, llama races, cowboy church, live music, and vendors. This tradition goes back to the mining days when burros were essential pack animals. It's as Colorado as it gets.

Park County Fair (July) — Classic county fair with rodeo, vendors, food, and rides.

Silverheels 100 Mile Endurance Run (July) — For the serious runners. An ultramarathon through alpine terrain, past ghost towns, and into wildflower fields.

The South Park Vibe

The best thing about Fairplay is what it isn't. It isn't a resort town. It isn't a tourist trap. It isn't trying to be anything other than what it is — a small mountain community where people wave at strangers, restaurants close when they feel like it, and the biggest traffic jam is a moose crossing the road.

If you want five-star restaurants and boutique shopping, drive 45 minutes to Breckenridge. If you want the real Colorado — quiet, unpretentious, and surrounded by a thousand square miles of mountain beauty — you're already here.

The people searching "things to do in Fairplay, Colorado" already sense this. You don't end up looking at Fairplay by accident. You end up here because you want the real thing — and that's exactly what this town delivers.
