25+ Things to Do in Fairplay, Colorado

Hiking, fishing, skiing, restaurants, stargazing, off-roading and more — the complete local guide to Colorado's best-kept mountain secret.

14 min read · March 2026 · By your hosts at Skyfall Chalet

Fairplay, Colorado sits at 10,000 feet in the South Park basin — yes, the real South Park that inspired the TV show. But forget the cartoon. The real South Park is a thousand square miles of mountain beauty surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks, Gold Medal trout streams, and some of the best dark sky stargazing in the lower 48.

Most people drive through Fairplay on the way to Breckenridge without stopping. That's a mistake. This town of 750 people is surrounded by more outdoor activities than you could fit into a week, has genuinely good restaurants, and offers the kind of quiet mountain experience that resort towns lost a long time ago.

We know this place inside and out. This is everything worth doing.

What's in This Guide

Hiking & 14ers

Fairplay is surrounded by some of the most accessible 14ers in Colorado and dozens of trails ranging from easy lakeside walks to full-day alpine adventures. You can summit a 14,000-foot peak before lunch and be back in the hot tub by 3 PM.

Easy — Family Friendly

One of the best effort-to-reward ratios on this list. A short, easy trail with stunning shoreline views of Blue Lake nestled in a mountain valley. Perfect for children, groups with mixed abilities, and leashed dogs. Don't miss the waterfall — you can hike right up to it.

Limber Grove Trail

Moderate distance Ancient bristlecone pines

Walk through groves of ancient bristlecone pine trees — some over 1,000 years old. A quieter alternative to the 14er crowds with a completely different kind of mountain beauty. The twisted, weathered trees at this elevation are unlike anything you've seen.

Stargazing

At 10,000 feet with zero light pollution, the night sky in South Park is extraordinary. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, and on clear nights you can see more stars than you've ever seen in your life. No special equipment needed — just step outside and look up.

Why It's So Good Here

Fairplay sits in a massive open basin far from any major city lights. Denver is 100+ miles away behind multiple mountain ranges. The high elevation puts you above much of the atmospheric interference. And the dry mountain air means clearer skies more nights per year than most places in the country.
