Skiing from Fairplay: Breckenridge, Keystone & More Without the Crowds

World-class ski resorts without resort-town prices. Stay in Fairplay and be on the slopes in 45 minutes or less.

8 min read · February 2026 · By your hosts at Skyfall Chalet

Here's something most people don't think about when planning a Colorado ski trip: you don't have to stay at the resort. Resort towns like Breckenridge and Keystone are incredible, but they come with resort-town pricing on everything — lodging, food, parking, even coffee.

Fairplay is 45 minutes from Breckenridge over Hoosier Pass on Highway 9. That's the same drive time many Denver commuters spend getting to work. The difference is you're trading a $500/night hotel room for a mountain chalet with a hot tub, sauna, and 360-degree views — at a fraction of the cost.

After a day on the mountain, you drive back to silence, stars, and a soak in the hot tub. No crowded restaurants, no fighting for parking, no $18 beers. Just the mountains.

The Resorts

Breckenridge Ski Resort

~45 min from Skyfall 2,908 acres 187 trails Epic Pass

The flagship resort near Fairplay. Breck has something for everyone — gentle groomers on Peak 9 to serious above-treeline terrain on Peaks 6 and 7. The town is walkable with great restaurants for après-ski. The drive over Hoosier Pass is scenic and straightforward, though AWD and good tires are recommended in winter.

Keystone Resort

~55 min from Skyfall 3,148 acres Night skiing available Epic Pass

Just 10 minutes past Breckenridge, Keystone is great for families. Excellent intermediate terrain on the front side, challenging back bowls behind it. The big draw is night skiing until 8 PM on select evenings — sleep in, have a relaxed morning at the chalet, and still get a full day. The A51 terrain park is one of the best in the state.

Copper Mountain

~60 min from Skyfall 2,490 acres 150 trails Ikon Pass

A locals' favorite because of how the mountain is naturally divided by ability — beginners on the right, intermediates in the middle, experts on the left. You never accidentally end up on terrain that's too hard or too easy. Excellent snow quality thanks to elevation and north-facing aspects.

Loveland Ski Area

~60 min from Skyfall 1,800 acres Best value Independent

Skip the Epic Pass scene entirely. Loveland is independently owned, genuinely affordable, and sits right on the Continental Divide with some of the highest lift-served terrain in North America. No fancy village, no resort prices — just good snow and real skiing. The Ridge at 13,010 feet is serious expert terrain.

Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin)

~55 min from Skyfall Peak 13,050 ft Longest season in CO Ikon Pass

The locals' mountain. High, steep, no-nonsense, and it stays open later than anywhere else — often into June. Montezuma Bowl and East Wall are legitimate expert terrain, and the legendary tailgate scene in the parking lot is its own form of après.

Why Stay in Fairplay Instead of at the Resort?

The math is simple. A hotel room in Breckenridge during ski season runs $300–$700+ per night for a basic room. A 3-bedroom cabin at Skyfall Chalet — with hot tub, sauna, fireplace, full kitchen, and space for 6 — costs significantly less. Split among friends or a family, the savings are dramatic.

Beyond the money, there's the experience. Resort towns mean tourists, restaurant waits, and resort markups. Fairplay means genuine mountain solitude. The hot tub hits differently after skiing when you're looking at stars instead of condos. And you can cook in a fully equipped kitchen instead of spending $60 per person at a resort restaurant every night.

The Hoosier Pass Drive

The drive over Hoosier Pass (11,539 ft) is well-maintained and regularly plowed, but it is a mountain pass. AWD or 4WD is strongly recommended in winter, and good snow tires are a must. Colorado's Traction Law requires chains or AWD/4WD with snow tires on mountain passes. Rarely more than 45 minutes, but give extra time after big storms.

Beyond Downhill: Other Winter Activities

Not a skier? Want a rest day? Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are excellent on trails like Tie Hack and Limber Grove, both within 15 minutes of Skyfall. Snowmobiling tours operate in the area. And the reservoirs — Antero, Spinney, Eleven Mile — offer world-class ice fishing from December through March.

Or just stay at the chalet. The hot tub, sauna, fire pit, and fireplace make a pretty compelling argument for a "rest day" that's better than most people's vacation.
